like a campaign rally. he's out there campaigning now for his position on the fiscal cliff and also campaigning against the anti-union vote that's coming up tomorrow in michigan. >> he certainly owes organized labor. and obviously if you're a democratic president and there's a ballot like this, certainly hard to see why you would stay away, especially in a state like michigan. but i think what we are seeing is the president applying pressure to the republicans and looking for wedges. one of the wedges we're going to see is the republicans who feel more strongly about the income tax versus republicans who feel more strongly about the capital gains tax. the president may offer different kind of concession, to those two groups. >> the criticism he's getting is instead of going out there and ka paining in michigan and elsewhere, bring these republicans over to the white house, get in a room, work out this deal this week as opposed to next week and resolve it so the country doesn't go over the fiscal cliff. >> where's congress right now? they're home. where's congress most of the time? a

in the eye and actually had a conversation. now that's a really big deal when it comes to the fiscal cliff crisis. because in just 22 days americans face severe tax hikes and spending cuts unless these two leaders can find a way to compromise. now neither side would discuss specifics about their conversation. but after yesterday's white house meeting, a spokesman for the president said "the lines of communication remain open." now that may be music to the ears of former white house chief of staff erskine bowles, one half of the bowles-simpson reduction duo. >> they started a tango now. you know, any time you got two guys in there tangoing, you have a chance to get it done. >> brianna keilar is live now from washington. we don't have a lot of details about what went on in that meeting. maybe if they're both not talking, that may be a good thing. >> that's right. in fact, we have almost absolutely no details. the things that really interesting, though, to observers here is the statement that came out from the white house and from the speaker's office. they're the same statement verbatim. the

's very foggy about seeing the picture of how exactly this all comes together on the fiscal cliff negotiations. while there are outlines of what a possible compromise could look like, liken stead of raising tax rates to 39.6% which was the clinton-era rate, maybe go to 37% and close some loopholes and deductions. there are still not indications that house republicans are willing to do that. and on the spending side, which really if you look at the media across the board, there hasn't been a lot of focus on it at all. the spending side. and what spending cuts are on the table. we haven't heard anything specific about what is in addition to what's been out there from the very beginning. jon: right because the republicans claim the country doesn't have an income or a revenue problem it has a spending problem, and that's where republicans say the bulk of the savings, or the rescue plan for this -- this budget is going to come. >> reporter: sure, i mean you have some proposals that are out there, for example, means testing, medicare, social security. you have adjustments to consumer pr

the fiscal cliff or do you think that judging from your seeing what this meeting behind closed doors now and as time comes down to the end that they will come up with a deal at the 11th hour? >> well, look, there's always that possibility that you know, they could go over the fiscal cliff, but you're right in pointing out that this is how it usually plays out is that everyone voicing optimism at the start. then there's a lot of rhetoric that's thrown around. both sides getting sort of dug in positions and then you start to get sort of this air of compromise. what we're sensing now is that there does appear to be this willingness on both sides to compromise. you hear democrats talking about entitlements, willing to back down on entitlements, and then some republicans talking about you know, some kind of increase in taxes for wealthy americans and so, that really is a starting point where both sides have been digging in now for weeks and the hope is that this, there could be some real movement this week. get this wrapped up before the fiscal cliff scenario plays out. >> all right, dan loth
